I'm playing until I'm done - which can mean either beating the game, or until I've played it enough to feel like I've gotten a full sampling of the game and have no desire to keep playing it.Mostly leaning toward shorter games, which tend to be indies.Or, for that matter, wants to sit through 120 hours of me grinding up students' relationships in FE3H. I'm picking games that I'm not invested in and don't care about perfecting/getting the good ending nobody wants to watch me take four hours to get through a single level in Deus Ex for my pacifist Foxiest of the Hounds playthrough, or wait for me to look up spoilers and guides online to make sure everybody likes me in Fire Emblem.I'd meant to record and put up videos on YouTube afterward, as well, but unfortunately some really shoddy audio mixing that I just never went back and checked means it's all fairly unusable up until C, but I wanted to write down some quick impressions of the games I've gotten through so far. With the advent of quarantine and my subsequent decision to fill time by streaming, I decided to start on the Alphabet Challenge. Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, The The game is voice acted pretty well and is generally all around good.Īs for I, well, I'm discounting all the 'Idle. This is absolutely my sort of thing and I love it and apparently things change and the writings you need to translate get longer and more complex on extra playthroughs after the first, so I might be stuck playing this for a while more.Īs for the rest of it, the main means of travel is either walking around on relatively small environments or an oddly relaxing sail around a looping space river thing (the game pretty much takes place on a river-connected collection of somewhat inhabited/inhabitable asteroids by the look of them) and travel between those is nice and zen. Now, languages don't quite work how they're presented here, you need something to link a word or phrase at least to something that you know the meaning of, but it's not a terrible guess that's used in the beginning of the game to establish your first two examples of the ideograms that everything is written in, and from there it's guessing at other short phrases that you find in places the expand your knowledge, referencing against other examples of the same symbols in other contexts to make sure your assuming meaning remains valid in both cases, getting ideas of what things mean from their context - what are they on, what is it made of, where was it found/likely made, what are the people - if any remain - in the area like. The only thing it's missing is a taller female love interest for the main character and birds everywhere, then it actually would be literally everything I like all in one place. So, this is a game about languages, history and puzzles and yeah this is pretty much tailor made to hit all my buttons in the best of ways all at once. You know what else is a thing? Me having a love for languages, history and puzzles, having studied to go into that field but then having my health hit multiple problems more or less all at once and ruining that plan for me. In the end, Red Faction doesn't really do enough with the premise, but it's still an enjoyable FPS, albeit a bit too reliant on quicksaves.Īnd I only just noticed I've been starting pretty much all of these off like that, so I guess it's a thing.

(Judging by the speedrun, none of the enemies can hit anybody more than 6 feet in front of them, and somebody armed them all with Airsoft guns as a practical joke.) (The semi-mandatory stealth sections, and the bosses specifically.) This was on Medium, but Easy looks to be too easy. (The speedrun takes better advantage of the destructible environments, because the runner knows exactly where to dig.) I found the game rather on the difficult side, both because you are really fragile (get hit a few times, and half your health disappears, not to mention the railgun enemies that can kill you in one hit) and because of some bullshit sections. There's a few spots where explosives are really useful, but for 99% of the game, it's just standard FPS mechanics. While you can blow rock walls up, there's usually nothing behind them except more rock. That aside, what I was expecting from this game is a game based around the gimmick of destructible environments. (I did not install it, because I am a fool, and just cheated past the bugged area.) Also note that this is a game where you want to have saves both quicksaving between fights, and manually saving after every level.

If you plan to play this, note that the fan patch is highly recommended as it doesn't work on modern computers in at least one spot.
